In the windswept town of Nashtifan, situated in northeastern Iran’s Khorasan Razavi province, an extraordinary achievement of ancient engineering has withstood the ravages of time. For over a thousand years, vertical-axis windmills have harnessed the region’s fierce winds, which can reach speeds of up to 120 km/h (75 mph). Known locally as “wind catchers,” these ingenious structures have been grinding grain into flour for centuries.
A Unique Design for Challenging Conditions
The windmills of Nashtifan showcase a distinctive vertical-axis design that sets them apart from the horizontal-axis models found in Europe and elsewhere. This innovative configuration allows the mills to operate effectively in high winds, despite some limitations in energy capture. Constructed entirely from natural materials such as clay, straw, and wood, these structures exemplify the resourcefulness and ingenuity of ancient Persian engineers.

Even today, they continue to grind up to 150 kilograms (330 pounds) of wheat when conditions are right. While modern electric mills have largely taken over the grain processing industry, the windmills of Nashtifan remain an essential part of Iran’s cultural heritage. Recognized as a national heritage site in 2002, these structures face challenges from climate change and the need for ongoing conservation. The dedication of local custodians, like Ali Muhammed Etebari, who voluntarily maintains the mills, underscores the community’s commitment to preserving this unique legacy for future generations.
