The Chariot’s Magnificent Features
The discovery reveals a four-wheeled processional carriage, found within a stable’s portico where horse remains were previously identified. This extraordinary vehicle showcases the pinnacle of Roman craftsmanship, featuring elaborately detailed bronze and tin decorations, remarkably preserved iron components, and mineralized wood remains. Perhaps most fascinating are the delicate imprints of organic materials, including rope traces and floral embellishments, which have survived through the millennia.
Battle Against Time and Treasure Hunters
The discovery site, Civita Giuliana, a suburban villa on Pompeii’s outskirts, has become a race against time for archaeologists. While working to unveil its historical treasures, they must also protect the site from illegal looters who construct tunnels in search of valuable artifacts. By extraordinary fortune, the chamber housing the chariot remained untouched for nearly 2,000 years, despite looters’ tunnels coming dangerously close on both sides.
Innovative Preservation Techniques
The excavation team employed cutting-edge preservation methods to protect this priceless find. Their innovative approach included carefully pouring plaster into voids left by decomposed organic materials, allowing them to preserve even the most delicate details, such as rope impressions, for future generations to study and admire.

Massimo Osanna, the archaeological park’s outgoing director, emphasized the chariot’s unique ceremonial nature: “This is not just any chariot, but a Pilentum, as referenced in historical sources. It wasn’t used for everyday transportation or agricultural purposes, but rather played a crucial role in community celebrations, parades, and processionals.”
